A Not-So-Happy New Year

Engineers will be looking at potential structural problems at the Smith Swim Center in early January. The inspection is slated to be completed on January 4th. There is a possibility that the inspection will result in a recommendation to close the building. If Smith does close we will be allowed access to the courts at Pizzatola. More info to follow in two weeks.

Here is the University press release.

Brown Red back on track

Source: Peter Nannucci

A few results in dribs and drabs.

  1. Dwight Haley bt Steve Sloman (rescheduled from 2 weeks ago) 3-2.
  2. Last night's results and synopsis:
    • Cioffi bt Cashmon 3-1
    • Nannucci bt Otto Gregory 3-2
    • All others rescheduled.

Our season seems to be somewhat back on track after crushing defeats to both the other Brown B team and Newport the last two weeks. Pity that only 2 matches were played last night and the rest rescheduled - seems to be a trend this year. In true Bob Cioffi form he was like a ferret running around the court and got to everything that his opponent could throw his way winning quite comfortably in 4. My match on the other hand was a marathon and then some. An hour on the court and a bucket load of sweat later I managed to pull off (at least from my perspective) an upset win after having lost all previous matches against him. I happened to run into Otto at some stage and instead of hearing a thud the sound that emanated was a splashing sound... The match could not be more even with each of the first 3 games going to 6-6. The third game was the crucial game to win and both of us realized that - I took it 10-9 to go into a 2-1 lead after making the correct (lucky) call at 8-8. Let's hope the rest of the team continues this winning trend in their rescheduled matches.

The heat is on!

The sauna in the mens locker room is now up and functioning.

Courts will be open for RISRA matches in the evenings over winter break. We have the courts from 6-8:30 pm on Mon-Thur. Teams will be able to use all courts so you should be able to get matches played and have everyone packed up by the time the building gets locked at 8:30. Please don't keep Jose late.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde

Source - John Oliver

The bright spot in the Brown Red A lineup last night was Phil Moen. Taking his three games in about 15 minutes, he alone kept us from a route the likes of which hasn't been seen since Atilla decided to wander of the Steppes. Of course there are lessons to be learned in defeat and last night was no exception. The loss of our #3 player to exams this week was a small set back. One that we should have been able to recover from. Mike Parent had his game face on and played exceptionally. In a close five gamer he took John Wilson to the edge but was unable to push him over. Ken Wise called out from injury had to play on cold courts and couldn't get his game going. My lessons were many and varied. 1. If you think your strings look pretty ratty and might break soon get them replaced. They broke. 2. If your backup racquet has broken strings get them replaced. I needed that racquet. 3. If your backup backup racquet has a crack in it, get a new one. It bent. 4. If the drop is hurting your opponent keep dropping, don't try to demonstrate that you can beat him two ways. I lost.

All of this pales however in comparison to the results of our #1. Shashank Malleable Mallick. Our rock. Our money in the bank. Our guaranteed winner. Playing earlier in the week and thus not having his team there to supply backbone, Mallick shanked his team with an ill conceived agreement to spot his opponent several (5) points. Yes I said five. Even in the final game when given the opportunity to play straight up he decided to give his opponent points. Hubris? Nobody would believe that. Boredom? Playing me maybe but not Matt Beuchner. Maybe he is just too nice. The reason is unimportant however because Shashank is now on double secret probation. Shashank, the party is over. You will not play without your team in attendance. Mike Parent will tell you where and when to play and young man that is when you will play. You will not hit the tin, you will not play in jeans, you will not play in bare feet, you will keep hydrated, you will get your shoulder repaired. One way or another the team is going to insure that you win every match from here on out.
