The bright spot in the Brown Red A lineup last night was Phil Moen.
Taking his three games in about 15 minutes, he alone kept us from a route the likes of which hasn't been seen since Atilla decided to wander of the Steppes. Of course there are lessons to be learned in defeat and last night was no exception. The loss of our #3 player to exams this week was a small set back. One that we should have been able to recover from. Mike Parent had his game face on and played exceptionally. In a close five gamer he took John Wilson to the edge but was unable to push him over. Ken Wise called out from injury had to play on cold courts and couldn't get his game going. My lessons were many and varied. 1. If you think your strings look pretty ratty and might break soon get them replaced. They broke. 2. If your backup racquet has broken strings get them replaced. I needed that racquet.
3. If your backup backup racquet has a crack in it, get a new one. It bent. 4. If the drop is hurting your opponent keep dropping, don't try to demonstrate that you can beat him two ways. I lost.
All of this pales however in comparison to the results of our #1.
Shashank Malleable Mallick. Our rock. Our money in the bank. Our guaranteed winner. Playing earlier in the week and thus not having his team there to supply backbone, Mallick shanked his team with an ill conceived agreement to spot his opponent several (5) points. Yes I said five. Even in the final game when given the opportunity to play straight up he decided to give his opponent points. Hubris?
Nobody would believe that. Boredom? Playing me maybe but not Matt Beuchner. Maybe he is just too nice. The reason is unimportant however because Shashank is now on double secret probation. Shashank, the party is over. You will not play without your team in attendance.
Mike Parent will tell you where and when to play and young man that is when you will play. You will not hit the tin, you will not play in jeans, you will not play in bare feet, you will keep hydrated, you will get your shoulder repaired. One way or another the team is going to insure that you win every match from here on out.
